Unusual Types of Yoga – Try Something New

The Hormona Team

As the popularity of yoga rises, so too do the number of options for different (often unusual) types that are available to attend. Amongst these are doga (dog yoga), naked yoga, wine/beer yoga, and even goat yoga. Here’s the lowdown on what these kinds of yoga entail and why you should try something new and check them out:

1. Doga (Dog Yoga)

Perhaps the most popular kind of ‘unusual’ yoga, having coined its own term, is Doga. There are many different approaches to Doga, with some classes sticking to a specific programme of training that teaches your furry friend to hold an array of poses, and others which are more focused on having a bit of fun. An easy google search will provide you with different options for classes all over London and other major cities around the globe. Led by Mahny Djahanguiri, you can give it a go at The Stratford in London, the next event is happening December 14th and more information can be found here: Doga at The Stratford.

2. Goat Yoga

Another animal-centric form of yoga is…goat yoga. Yep, you read it right, yoga with goats. One reason for the rise of animal-related yoga is that interacting with animals releases the hormone oxytocin, which is associated with feelings of happiness and stress relief. This, combined with yoga, is the ultimate recipe for rediscovering your chill and helping keep a smile on your face. So, why goats I hear you ask? Well… why not! Whilst you will probably have to travel further afield to try a Goat yoga class, you will certainly have a session you’ll never forget. For further information visit Simply Soulful.

3. Beer Yoga

Of course there’s a style of yoga for all you party people out there. Picture this, it’s a Friday night, and you’re torn between winding down with some yoga or letting your hair down and having a few drinks. Fear not, you can combine the two with beer yoga! Amongst other variations which pair yoga with an array of spirits and alcoholic treats, beer yoga is a new craze that allows for you to stretch those limbs whilst simultaneously cracking open a cold one.

Whilst this phenomenon started as an activity to take part in at festivals, regular classes are continuing to pop up around the world, allowing for yogis and beer drinkers alike to mix and match their hobbies in an exciting new way. These classes tend to primarily pop up during the summer months, so be sure to keep an eye out. Until then, check out this short video from a previous beer yoga class in London.

4. Naked Yoga

Finally, though it certainly isn’t everybody’s cup of tea, naked yoga is a new kind of unusual yoga that allows people to let loose and encourage body positivity whilst they practise their downward dogs and tree poses. This can be hugely empowering in its encouragement of self-acceptance, reminding attendees how many different body types there are and how all of these have the same capabilities. So, why not try it out and remind yourself how to be comfortable in your own skin? Oh, and if you want to find out more, make sure you don’t make the same mistake as I did in searching for ‘naked yoga’ rather than ‘naked yoga classes’… You can find out more about naked yoga and classes available to attend at Doria Yoga.
