Hormones and hairloss

What is hormone related hairloss?

Hormone-related hair loss, also known as androgenetic alopecia or female pattern hair loss, is a common condition in which the hair gradually thins and falls out, primarily in women. It is influenced by hormonal changes in the body, specifically the effects of androgens, which are a group of male hormones that are present in both men and women.

Why could it be happening?

In women, the main hormone involved in hormone-related hair loss is dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a derivative of testosterone. DHT can bind to hair follicles and cause them to shrink over time, leading to a shorter hair growth cycle and thinner hair. Additionally, estrogen and progesterone, which are female hormones, also play a role in maintaining healthy hair.

The fluctuations and imbalances of these hormones, which can occur during various life stages such as puberty, pregnancy, menopause, or due to medical conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or thyroid disorders, can contribute to hair loss.

Hormone-related hair loss typically presents as diffuse thinning over the top of the scalp, rather than complete bald patches, and can be a distressing experience for many women. It may also lead to reduced self-esteem and confidence.

Are there treatments?

There are a lot of approaches and treatments that aim to address the root cause of hormone-related hair loss.

While some treatments focus on managing the symptoms and promoting hair growth, others target the underlying hormonal imbalances or contributing factors.

Here are some holistic approaches and treatments that may be considered:

Lifestyle Modifications: Making positive changes to your lifestyle can have a significant impact on hormonal balance and overall health, which can, in turn, influence hair health. This may include adopting a balanced diet rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, regular exercise, stress management techniques (like meditation or yoga), and getting enough quality sleep.

Hormone Balancing: For women experiencing hair loss due to hormonal imbalances, hormone therapy may be considered under the guidance of a healthcare professional. This could involve the use of hormonal contraceptives or other medications to regulate hormone levels.

Nutritional Supplements: Certain supplements, such as biotin, iron, zinc, and vitamin D, can support healthy hair growth. However, it’s crucial to consult a healthcare provider before starting any supplements, as excessive amounts of certain vitamins or minerals can have adverse effects.

PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) Therapy: PRP treatments are a holistic approach that involves using the patient’s own blood platelets, which are rich in growth factors, to stimulate hair growth. It can help improve hair follicle health and hair thickness.

Scalp Massage and Aromatherapy: Regular scalp massages with essential oils, like lavender or rosemary oil, can improve blood circulation to the scalp and promote hair growth. Aromatherapy may also help reduce stress, which can be a contributing factor to hair loss.

Traditional Herbal Remedies: Some herbal supplements and remedies have been used for centuries to promote hair health. Examples include saw palmetto, stinging nettle, and horsetail extract. However, their effectiveness varies, and it’s essential to consult a healthcare professional before using them.

Stress Reduction: Chronic stress can affect hormone levels and contribute to hair loss. Managing stress through relaxation techniques, mindfulness, or counseling can be beneficial.

Disclaimer: It’s important to note that while holistic treatments can be helpful for some individuals, the effectiveness may vary depending on the specific cause of hair loss and individual factors.

Consulting with a healthcare professional or a qualified hair specialist is essential to determine the most suitable holistic approach for your unique situation. They can provide personalized recommendations and help create a comprehensive treatment plan that addresses both the symptoms and the root cause of hair loss.
