I am a great believer in incorporating plants into your home and work place. I believe that they bring both physical and mental health benefits. I have written a few posts about this, so please go and check out my post about plants and a happier life and my quarantine hobby post for more information.
This article is all about suggestions of easy plants to take care of, which will brighten your home or workplace, without too much faff.
Spider Plants
Spider plants are possibly one of the easiest types of plants to look after. They are extremely fast growing and don’t require too much care.
They do like fairly frequent watering. Although they can survive without it; they will just grow slower and will need a bit of care when you come to them.
Spider plants are very effective when displayed on a shelf or hanging basket. They will eventually put out ‘pups’ which can be placed in water once old enough to create more plants.
The four spider plants that I own all came from the same mother spider plant. I found enormous satisfaction in raising my own spider plants. It was also incredibly easy to do!
Cacti
I am sure that you have heard about how easy cacti are to keep. They are difficult to kill as they don’t require much watering at all and they can survive in direct sunlight.
They are a wonderful addition to any plant collection or room. Small and effective they look wonderful on shelves or side tables.
However, don’t get these confused with succulents. Succulents are very different to cacti and are deceptively difficult to care for. There is a lot of false information surrounding succulents saying that they are simple. However they are very susceptible to root rot and will often burn in direct sunlight.
Make sure that you know what you are getting yourself into when you buy a plant!
Lucky Bamboo
Lucky bamboo is a wonderful plant that looks amazing in any space.
It can be grown in either soil or water and will do great in either. This makes it an easy to care for plant for those who would prefer not to work with soil.
You only need to change the water or water the plant occasionally. Although it does like purified water.
Dracaena
This is one of my favourite plants. It was one of the first plants that I purchased as while it is big, it is relatively simple to care for.
Dracaenas will tell you when they need watering as their leaves will begin to droop. The leaves will perk up again once it has been watered.
They love sunlight although make sure to keep an eye on the leaves to prevent sunburn.
Dracaenas will grow big if you allow them by repotting them. They are a wonderful plant to have in any room, whether on a windowsill or standing in the corner.
Monstera Deliciosa
This is another of my personal favourites. Monstera Delicious, or more commonly known as Swiss cheese plant, is a very attractive and fairly simple to care for plant.
They can grow up to 10ft tall and sometimes even taller in the wild. Although it is important to note that in the wild, Monsteras love to climb trees, and therefore the houseplants require some form of support upon which to climb. This can be achieved with a moss pole or a bamboo cane.
They are probably the least easy to care for on this list, but the pay off is worth it.
Final Thoughts
This is only a very basic guide to some of the plants that I find the easiest to care for in my collection. Please let me know in the comments if you would like to have some more information on any of the plants in the article.
I love all of the plants listed above (and many more). They bring great joy to my home, and I hope they can do the same for you.
