Introduction

The Hormona™ Perimenopause Kit is designed to help you easily monitor your hormones at home during the menopausal transition. With this kit, you can track two key hormones, Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) and Estrone-3-Glucuronide (E1G) using simple urine tests and the Hormona App.

This kit is ideal for women experiencing perimenopause who want to take charge of their hormone health and gain valuable insights into their ovarian function and hormonal changes. It includes three different tests to measure your hormone levels from your first morning urine, providing accurate and consistent results.

Once you activate the kit through the Hormona App, you’ll receive a personalized testing schedule that aligns with your hormonal profile, helping you understand the progression of hormone decline over time.

Please note, the Hormona™ Perimenopause Kit is for use with the Hormona App only. Hormona Perimenopause is not yet an approved medical device, it is a device for performance study.

Step-by-Step Testing Guide

FSH Test

FSH Test

Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) is released by your pituitary gland and it plays a vital role in encouraging your ovaries to grow follicles, which can develop into eggs. As those follicles grow, they also produce most of your Estrogen, so FSH helps control Estrogen levels too. During perimenopause, your body’s balance of FSH and Estrogen can shift. If your ovaries slow down or stop responding, your body may produce more FSH in an attempt to stimulate them. Testing FSH levels can give important insights into where you are on your hormone journey.

Instructions

Take a moment to read through the entire process before starting your test to ensure smooth, accurate results.

  • Before testing
  • Make sure you’ve activated your test kit in the Hormona App to start your Personalized Testing Schedule. Set a reminder for your usual wake-up time (and ensure notifications are on for the Hormona App in your device settings).

  • Get a clean, dry container ready to collect your urine sample.

  • *Top tip: Place the container somewhere you'll notice first thing in the morning!

  • Collect your sample
  • Collect your sample using the prepared container. Ensure there’s enough to fully cover the three holes on the sample pad, but no more.

  • If you’re using a menstrual cup or tampon, you can leave it in. If using a pad or the free flow method, wipe away excess blood before collecting the sample to avoid too much blood getting into your sample.

Getting started

  • STEP 01

Download the Hormona App & follow in-app instructions.

Follow in-app instructions. Check the app to confirm which test strip to use — this will be shown clearly with colour-coded graphics.

  • STEP 02

    Open the foil packet

Remove the test strip, each of which has a unique QR code.

  • STEP 03

    Scan the QR code

Tap “Scan QR code” in the app. Place the test strip on the white backing card, aligning it with on-screen guide.

  • STEP 04

    Dip the test strip

Remove the cap. Submerge the sample pad in urine — do not dip past the line beneath the cap.

  • STEP 05

    Start the timer

Tap ‘Start 15 second timer’ in the app. After 15 seconds, remove the strip from the sample.

  • STEP 06

    Recap & position the strip

Point the test strip downward (sample pad facing the floor). Gently shake off any excess fluid. Secure the cap again and place the strip flat with the QR code facing up.

  • STEP 07

    Wait 15 minutes

The app will automatically start a countdown. Once the 15 minutes are up, your strip is ready to scan.

  • STEP 08

    Final scan & results

After the 15-minute timer finishes, scan the test strip with your phone’s camera to instantly view your quantitative hormone results directly in the Hormona app.

The Hormona app & top tips

The Hormona app & top tips

The Hormona App turns your phone into a personal hormone lab, allowing you to easily analyse your hormone tests from the comfort of home. You can download it from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store, and it’s compatible with the following software versions: Apple iOS 13.4 or higher, Android 6.0 and up.

During onboarding, you’ll be asked to input key menstrual cycle details, like the date of your last period and your typical cycle length. Using this information, our algorithm will predict your next period based on the calendar method of menstrual tracking.

*Top tip: Tracking at least 3 cycles in the Hormona App before starting hormone testing will give you a more accurate average cycle length. This will also improve the accuracy of your personalised testing schedule.

Once you’ve created your account and received your test kit, you can activate the kit directly in the app. The app will then guide you through each step of your testing journey.

The Hormona App allows you to log 45+ different symptoms daily. The more data you log, the better our algorithm gets to know you—providing even more valuable insights into your hormone health. This personalized information helps support you in living your healthiest, happiest life.

*Top tip: Set a reminder at your usual wake-up time to ensure you don’t miss any testing days. Make sure notifications are enabled for the Hormona App in your device settings.

Understanding your hormones

Once you’ve activated your hormone testing profile, you’ll get access to your personalised testing schedule. Once you’ve taken 15 test (3 months) you will unlock your perimenopause stage. This will provide insights as to where you are in your perimenopause journey and stage specific advice that you can incorporate to support your hormones and general well-being throughout your transition.

FAQs

Place the opened, unused test into a ziplock bag, alongside the silica dry / desiccant. Try to remove as much air as possible from the ziplock bag before closing. There is a window at the back of the desiccant that will go pink / purple if it detects moisture, indicating the test to be unusable. Use any opened test stored in a ziplock bag by the next testing day for this hormone.

Our technology has only been optimised to account for background on a white, shine-free background. Your results may not be as accurate as they would be on a white background.

Don’t worry, place the test on plain white shine-free paper or card.

If you have followed the instructions and wiped excess blood before collecting your urine sample, the amount of blood in your sample should not affect the results. If there is an excessive amount of blood in the sample, please get in touch at [email protected] and share a photo of the sample if you’re comfortable to do so.

It is optimal to begin on your first testing day at the beginning of the cycle. But don’t worry, you can skip the first testing day, and begin testing mid-cycle.

If you don’t see a control line on your test strip beside the test line, this test result is invalid. Please take a picture of this test and contact us at [email protected] with your order number, test reference number and lot number, along with the picture taken of the test.

Yes, you can access the results of previously taken tests in the testing dashboard.

No, each individual test is for single use only. Please discard the test after scanning in the general waste bin.

This is because of the science behind both our Estrogen and Progesterone Tests which are competitive lateral flow immunoassays. These tests involve a competition between two things, the hormone in your sample, and a label on the sample pad which creates the coloured line. The hormone in the sample will outcompete the label, and bind to the line test-line more than the label. This means the more Estrogen/Progesterone hormone in your urine sample, the more hormones is bound to the test line, and the less space for the label to bind and create a colour. The line we can see illuminated is from the label binding to the test line, so more hormone means less label binding, and a fainter line.

The same as the above scenario applies, vice versa. As both the Estrogen and Progesterone tests are competitive lateral flow immunoassays, in this case there is less hormone in your urine sample, meaning more of the label which creates the coloured line has more space to bind to the sample pad and create a coloured line that is darker.
