Key takeaways

I always thought that one of the many perks of growing up, along with no longer having a bedtime and being able to have as much cake as you want, was that bad skin would be a thing of the past. However, I have been sorely disappointed to find that my breakouts just won’t grow up.

Expensive creams and exfoliating scrubs might promise big results, but often fall short of their claims leaving you in your overdraft and still dealing with bad skin problems! If you can relate, it might be time to try a new approach.

If you’re still stressing about your skin try adding these five things into your diet and saving that £50 you would have spent on a whole new skincare routine!

 1. Brazil Nuts

These delicious nuts are incredibly rich in selenium which is a powerful antioxidant. Selenium offsets free radicals (these are unstable atoms that can damage cells and cause illness and aging) before they can lead to tired-looking skin. As well as being fabulous for your skin, Brazil nuts are also a great source of protein and energy whilst also being super easy to eat at your desk to help keep you focused and productive throughout the workday.

2. Tofu

These unsuspecting little white cubes are jam-packed with calcium, vitamin E, and protein. Tofu is basically magic as it has the ability to slow down the loss of collagen and help maintain your skin’s elasticity! And, as we all know by now, cutting down on the amount of meat you consume is one of the best ways to help reduce your impact on the planet: saving the world with amazing skin sounds like a win-win to me.

3. Oysters

Feeling indulgent? But don’t want to provoke another breakout? Why not spend an evening at your nearest Champagne and oyster bar? These little shellfish are a great low-calorie source of zinc which is an anti-inflammatory. This means they are particularly great for combating redness and even acne scarring. Fabulous!

4. Yellow and orange fruits and veg

Just like tofu, these fruits and veg promote collagen formation which helps keep your skin looking youthful for longer. Try to avoid drinking your fruits and vegetables though as blending or juicing food means that it gets digested much quicker than if eaten whole and in turn, this means that your body has far less time to absorb the vitamins and minerals from that healthy orange or carrot.

5. Water

You could be living on a strict diet of tofu burgers and oysters followed by carrot cake with Brazil nuts, but if you neglect your H2O intake then it will all be for nothing. Drinking at least 2 liters of water a day will help with circulation and toxin removal from the skin and also combat inflammation amongst many other health benefits.
